Netflix

Why I loved ‘It’s Okay Not to Be Okay’-A Korean Drama.

Heya… How have you been?

The lockdown has given us the opportunity to catch up with amazing online series. Netflix has probably been a saviour for a lot of us.

Perhaps, it is a life saviour for me. When I am having a bad day with all the melancholic feelings and negative thoughts attacking the solace of my mind, all I have to do is open the Netflix app and watch whatever interests me.

Most of the lockdown, I have watched Korean Dramas. Yes, I am that obsessed Korean drama fan now.

I have watched quite a lot and many are on my favourite list already. And some of them have been so amazing that I can and have watched them more than once.

However, there is this one Korean Drama which is not just close to my heart, it has left some kind of impact on me.

I can’t really pinpoint what exactly is it or give one particular reason why I loved this series. But this series is just perfect…

Everything about this drama is different and amazing. The story, the cinematography, the characters and the actors and actress who have played their roles, each one, be it the main leads or the supporting cast…Each one has done some marvellous job.

The plot is basically based on mental health issues…

The 3 main leads, Moon Gang-tae is a caretaker at the psychiatric hospital, his elder brother Moon Sang-tae is autistic and is a born artist.

Ko-Moon Young is a children-story book writer who seems to have some anti-social issue…

The story revolves around these three specifically Moon Gang-tae and Ko-Moon Young’s romantic plot, how they heal each other and what is the mystery behind their dark past that links them…and how they overcome it…

Perhaps, the most amazing thing about this drama is, each episode gives you insights about different traumas, different people suffer and what is the reason behind those traumas.

Each episode gives us a glimpse of different fairy tales that actually gives us some really amazing lessons on life and human emotional issues. Trust me the way those stories are portrayed is something very unique.

Those illustrations books are just super amazing and I wish I could have them all. The stories give you a different perspective on life altogether

I loved all 3 main characters and could relate to all 3. I wish to be a writer like Ko-Moon Young (lol), emotionally I am like Moon-Gang-tae and I wanted to be an illustrator like Moon-Sang-tae (which I can’t now).

There is one incident, where only the publisher who understands Ko-Moon Young is aware that if she stopped writing, it’s probably her own death…As that’s the only way she can communicate with the world…That part choaked me…

There is another one towards the end when Moon-Sang -tae hold the book with his name as an illustrator of the book and sees his photograph inside the book, he was so happy…Being autistic had made him feel so helpless at times but he made his dream come true, he was passionate about becoming a professional illustrator… This part filled me up with happiness…

That reminded me, the day when I’ll hold my own book perhaps, I might have the same feeling… There again I could relate to him…

Moon-Gang-Tae is emotionally tired, and he probably hasn’t lived his life the way he wishes to, he is expert to fake his smile, expert in suppressing his feelings, he at times been scared but had no one to rely on and had to put on a brave face even when inside he was breaking… I so could relate to this character…

There is a dialogue where he says..

. I am done with being someone who is needed by others…

This dialogue just hit my heart right at the centre…

I also loved the two original song tracks of this drama. Especially ‘In silence’…That song just has all my heart…

The other one is ‘Lighting Up your world’

here is the video of the song I love the most… Every word of this song won my heart…

I am not going to give any more insights because I really hope and wish everyone must watch this drama at least once. ( I watched it twice already and writing this blog about it urges me to watch it again…)

The drama is available on Netflix and has 16 episodes. Korean dramas have some unique plots yet you may find some too cliched. But they have a really amazing way when it comes to storytelling.
