O- Oil Painting.

As an artist and art lover, I have always been fascinated by fellow artist’s how beautiful and realistic art they create.

One of the most captivating forms of painting is oil painting. The in-depth minute details and so many different styles are created through this medium. Everything is so amusing to me.

When I wanted to try oil painting, I was lost. I used to feel it was more complex and will need proper guidance for me to understand the process of oil painting.

So here are something I wish to share if you are also someone who is confused about oil paints and would want to give it a try.

Introduction to Oil Painting

Oil painting is a form of painting that uses pigments suspended in oil as a medium. It is a traditional form of painting that has been used for centuries. The use of oil as a medium allows the artist to create a range of effects, from smooth and blended to textured.

The use of oil also allows for a slow drying time, which gives the artist more time to work on the painting and make changes as needed.

Benefits of Oil Painting

There are many benefits to oil painting. One of the most significant benefits is the ability to create depth and texture in the painting. The slow drying time of the oil allows for the paint to be manipulated and blended, creating a range of effects. Oil painting is also very forgiving, allowing the artist to make changes and corrections as needed. This makes it an excellent medium for beginners.

Another benefit of oil painting is its durability. When properly cared for, oil paintings can last for centuries, making them a valuable investment. Unlike other forms of painting, oil paintings do not fade or yellow over time, making them perfect for preserving memories and creating heirlooms.

Materials Needed for Oil Painting

To get started with oil painting, you will need some basic materials. The most important material is the paint. You will need a range of colors, including white, black, and a range of primary and secondary colors. You will also need brushes, canvases or canvas boards, and a palette knife. Additionally, you will need a solvent, such as turpentine or mineral spirits, and a medium, such as a linseed oil or stand oil.

When choosing your materials, it is important to choose quality materials. Cheap materials can result in a cheap-looking painting, and they may not last as long as higher-quality materials. Investing in good-quality materials will ensure that your paintings look professional and last for many years.

Caution: Oil paints with their solvents, like turpentine, emits some chemical smell and are not fit for everyone. This is the reason why very few artists these days opt for oil paints. They also come with a lot of hassle.

Mixing Colors for Oil Painting

Mixing colors is an important part of oil painting. It is important to understand color theory and how colors interact with one another. The primary colors are red, blue, and yellow, and all other colors are created by mixing these colors. Secondary colors are created by mixing two primary colors, and tertiary colors are created by mixing a primary color with a secondary color.

When mixing colors, it is important to start with a small amount of paint and add more as needed. It is also important to mix enough paint to complete the area being painted, as it can be difficult to match the color exactly if more paint needs to be mixed later.

Care and Maintenance of Oil Paintings

Proper care and maintenance of oil paintings is important to ensure their longevity. It is important to keep the painting away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures, as this can cause the paint to crack or fade. It is also important to keep the painting clean and free from dust and dirt. One can use a soft brush to dust the dirt off.

Additionally, it is important to store the painting properly. If the painting is not going to be displayed, it should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from any moisture or humidity. If the painting is going to be transported, it should be wrapped in acid-free paper and stored in a sturdy box.

Conclusion

Oil painting is a beautiful and rewarding form of art. With the right materials and techniques, anyone can create a masterpiece that will last for generations. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced artist, oil painting is a medium that is worth exploring. So grab your brushes and paints, and let your creativity soar!

My Attempt on Oil Painting:

This was my 2nd attempt at oil painting. The first one was a year or two ago and I had messed it up.

So this January I tried it again and these 2 paintings came out good. I actually am in love with these.

Perhaps, I need more practice with oil paints.
